A Prayer for (or against, rather) Nausea

This week, I'm wrapping up my second trimester and entering the third trimester of my pregnancy! (Hooray!)

A little background on how I discovered I was pregnant: it was day five of my new appointment at the new church I'm serving. On the Friday before my first Sunday, I found out I was pregnant (quite the discovery!) My first trimester was quite tumultuous, with very challenging morning sickness symptoms. I'm still managing them with some at-home and medical interventions, even though I'm two-thirds of the way through my pregnancy. While I'm grateful that my morning sickness wasn't as severe as to require hospitalization or anything like that, my heart goes out to all pregnant women who are battling nausea and other numerous pregnancy symptoms on their journeys!

I'd like to celebrate this third-trimester milestone with you and share a prayer I wrote at the height of my morning sickness challenges earlier on. I pray that as you pray this prayer over yourself or a loved one who is experiencing nausea (whether pregnancy-induced or not), you find God's unconditional peace and calm in your body and spirit!

A Prayer for (or against, rather) Nausea

God of Peace and Calm,

You quiet the upset sea,

And you stilled a disturbing storm

To rescue your friends in the boat.

Grant me now

Your peace and calm in me

Quiet my upset stomach

And still my disturbing nausea,

When my soul exclaims,

“Does God not care that I am perishing?”

Rebuke the waves of nausea beating in me,

Wake in me a newness of calm and peace,

So that I may be rescued from this

Unsettling force within me.

May all that is within me

Wonder in your goodness.

Strengthen my faith to see that

even my nausea and queasiness obey you,

And lose its power before your mighty peace.

Amen.
